Upgrade Old Software

Recently we have seen an increase in hacking attempts on various sites across all servers. We do have a firewall and security tools in place to protect against any server level attacks. The firewall and security tools will not block a hacker from hacking a site that uses outdated software.

Though we do keep the core files upgraded for WordPress, Joomla (and others), we do not keep WordPress plugins or Joomla extensions up-to-date since it's just not possible for us to handle those for the customer without knowing the login info to the software.

I cannot stress hard enough how important it is to keep WordPress & Joomla (and all third party plugins/extensions) up-to-date. We see WordPress & Joomla sites get hacked all of the time due to the sites using vulnerable plugins or extensions.

WORDPRESS USERS

If you are using WordPress please make sure all plugins are up-to-date. WordPress plugins can be easily upgraded with 1-click from the WordPress admin area. If you need us to handle the WordPress plugin upgrades for you please open a support ticket and send us the WordPress admin URL, username and password for every WordPress install you need us to upgrade the plugins on.

JOOMLA USERS

If you're using Joomla, it is a bit more involved when upgrading extensions. If you are not sure if a Joomla extension is an old version or not, login to Joomla Admin Area and go to EXTENSIONS > INSTALL > COMPONENTS. There you will see the current versions of the extensions installed. You can ignore the extensions that have the author "Joomla! Project".

Do a search in Google for the extension name and add the words "Joomla extension" to the search term. I try to find the extensions on the Joomla website at http://extensions.joomla.org/. There you will find the newest version listed for each extension.

If you need us to handle Joomla extension upgraded for you there would be additional hourly fees due to the amount of time Joomla extension upgrades require. Another factor to consider if you are using Joomla 1.5.x, support for the software ends in the Spring of 2012. It would be best to migrate the site to Joomla 1.7 before then.
