Quick answer
iPhone: Removing a Mail account from a device stops its local access and can remove downloaded content from that device. It is different from deleting the mailbox at its provider.
Applies to
For the owner of the iPhone and the selected mailbox. The category's existing visibility is preserved. Device account removal, provider mailbox deletion and Apple Account changes are separate operations.
Steps
- Open the intended application or account and confirm its complete mailbox address and provider.
- Preserve required local-only messages and unsent drafts. Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts, select the exact account and review Delete Account before confirming removal from the device.
Check the result
Verify the intended account and device state. For a retained account, test two-way mail; after removal, confirm the provider-side mailbox still exists when that is the intended outcome.
Troubleshooting and support
Older releases may show Settings > Mail or Mail, Contacts, Calendars. If setup or authorization fails, check the current provider guidance and device restrictions rather than disabling TLS.
Contact support from the owning account with the domain, product/version, exact error, time/time zone and redacted evidence. Exclude credentials, session URLs, payment details and private customer records. Confirm any separate application-support scope.
