Quick answer
A usable form tells visitors what each field means, what is required, and how to correct a problem. Placeholder text alone is usually an unreliable substitute for a persistent, programmatically associated label.
Before you begin
Choose a form with permission to submit coordinated tests. Use synthetic details and identify whether it sends email, creates a lead, books an appointment, or triggers other actions.
What to do
- Check that every input has an understandable label and that visible labels correspond to the control’s accessible name. Include checkboxes and icon-only buttons.
- Explain required formats or constraints before submission. Do not make visitors discover a password, date, or upload requirement only through repeated failures.
- Submit a deliberately incomplete or invalid test where safe. Check that errors identify the field and explain how to fix it without erasing valid entries.
- Operate the form by keyboard and inspect it with the mobile keyboard open. Labels, errors, and the final action should remain available.
- Complete a valid test and verify both the confirmation and the intended downstream result. Coordinate any real notification or record creation.
How to check the result
The visitor should understand what happened and what comes next. A successful screen-reader or keyboard check concerns the complete interaction, not simply whether a label element exists in the source.
If you need help
For a reported barrier, provide the form URL, field label, steps, and redacted error. Keep submitted personal information out of screenshots and support examples. A third-party embedded form may require changes from its provider.
