Quick answer
Store migration needs a field and workflow map, not only a theme design. Products, variants, customers, historical orders, gift balances, subscriptions, content, and app data may require different methods and verification.
Before you begin
Inventory the source platform and decide which records should move, remain archived, or be recreated. Confirm authorized handling of personal data and financial records.
What to do
- Map product identifiers, variants, options, prices, stock, media, and custom fields to the intended Shopify structure. Note unsupported or transformed fields explicitly.
- Choose a suitable transfer method for each resource type. CSV, migration apps, and APIs have different capabilities and dependencies.
- Plan import order and relationships so records connect correctly. Coordinate notifications, fulfillment, marketing, and app behavior before test imports.
- Run a representative migration sample and compare record counts, field values, storefront presentation, and operational workflows.
- Prepare the final data window, URL redirects, account communication, and post-launch checks. Keep the source available until acceptance and recovery requirements are satisfied.
How to check the result
Validate meaningful examples, including complex products and recent records, rather than trusting an import success count alone. Distinguish historical information from active subscriptions, payment permissions, and other items needing a separate transfer process.
If you need help
If a migration tool cannot explain coverage, request a field-level plan before a bulk import. Keep customer exports protected and do not assume passwords, payment tokens, or app data can be transferred as ordinary product content.
