Quick answer
PuTTY selection commonly copies text, and right-click or Shift+Insert can paste according to its configuration. Pasting text with a newline can execute a shell command immediately.
Applies to
For PuTTY on your own Windows computer and an account with authorized SSH access. Use the hosting service's assigned hostname, port and user. An ordinary cPanel account is not a root login; your service may use a nonstandard SSH port.
Steps
- Select terminal text to copy it using the configured mouse behavior. Review the selection for secrets before placing it elsewhere.
- For a command from another source, inspect the full text in a plain-text editor first, including newlines and target paths.
- Paste only understood text into the intended session. Check whether it already executed before pressing Enter; do not paste unreviewed multi-line commands.
Check the result
Use a harmless example such as a single pwd command in your own authorized session to confirm the behavior.
Troubleshooting and support
If pasted text differs from what you expected, stop and clear the unexecuted line safely before continuing. Do not rerun a consequential command without checking its result.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
