Email forwarders vs. mailboxes Print

Quick answer

Use a mailbox when you need stored mail and authenticated sending. Use a forwarder when you want an address to deliver incoming messages to an existing mailbox.

Applies to

Interactive Online customers with an email-enabled cPanel service and permission to manage the selected domain. Mail hosted at Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or another provider is managed there. Tools vary by service; the presence of a website does not by itself establish hosted-email entitlement.

Steps

  1. Confirm where the domain actually receives mail. These steps apply to forwarding managed by this cPanel account.
  2. Open Email > Forwarders, then choose Add Forwarder in the email-account forwarding section.
  3. Enter the source address, choose its domain, and enter the complete destination address. Review for spelling errors and forwarding loops before saving.
  4. Send a message from an unrelated address you control to the source address and confirm it arrives at the destination. A forwarder does not provide a mailbox login or permission to send as the source address.

Verify the result

Test receiving at the final destination. If you also need to send as the source address, configure an authorized sending service separately; a forwarder alone does not supply one.

Troubleshooting and support

If the same message appears in two places, check whether the source has both a mailbox and a forwarder. Deleting a forwarding rule is different from deleting a mailbox. Contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, the exact tool, the time and time zone, the last successful step, and a redacted error or screenshot. Leave passwords, private keys, cookies, and complete configuration files out of the ticket.
