Quick answer

Use the payment provider's sandbox or test mode on staging to verify checkout without charging a real customer. Test credentials, live credentials, webhook destinations, and account permissions are separate configuration items.

Before you start

Choose the installed gateway and read its current official setup instructions. Confirm ownership of the merchant account, supported currency, HTTPS staging URL, and a way to prevent staging from sending customer email or fulfillment requests.

Steps

  1. Install or enable only the approved official gateway extension. Confirm its current cost and compatibility before adding a new paid dependency.
  2. Connect the sandbox through the provider's supported authorization flow or secure configuration fields. Keep secrets in those fields or an approved secret store, not in chat, source control, or public files.
  3. Configure the correct test webhook/callback destination and signing verification when the provider requires it. Keep the live site's existing connection unchanged.
  4. Run provider-documented test payment outcomes, including a success and a decline. Check the order notes and callback result instead of relying only on the thank-you screen.

Verify the result

The sandbox should show a matching test transaction and the intended WooCommerce order state. No real charge, shipment, subscription, or external accounting entry should be created by the test.

Troubleshooting and recovery

If confirmation fails, compare test/live mode, merchant account, callback URL, currency, and sanitized logs. Follow the specific gateway's documentation for authentication challenges. Only the owner should approve the later live activation.
