How to create a domain alias in cPanel Print

  • 4

Quick answer

A domain alias serves an existing site under another hostname by sharing its document root. An alias does not automatically redirect visitors to your preferred domain.

Applies to

For Interactive Online cPanel customers with permission to manage the selected service. The tool must be enabled on your plan. Open the correct service from the Client Area before changing anything. The preserved video shows an older interface.

Steps

  1. Confirm domain ownership and preserve the current DNS and mail configuration.
  2. Open Domains > Create a New Domain. Enter the additional hostname and select Share document root when it should serve the main website's files.
  3. Submit, then configure the domain's authoritative DNS and HTTPS. Use Redirects or the application's canonical-domain controls if visitors should be sent to one preferred URL.

Check the result

Test both hostnames and distinguish shared content from an actual HTTP redirect. Check the certificate for each HTTPS hostname.

Troubleshooting and support

If mail changes unexpectedly, review MX records and routing separately. Adding an alias neither transfers domain registration nor guarantees a certificate.

If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
