Creating Private Nameservers at Network Solutions Print

  • 4

Quick answer

At Network Solutions, private nameservers such as ns1.example.com require registrar host/glue registration and matching DNS records. They are different from simply assigning existing nameservers to a domain.

Applies to

For an authorized domain owner with a supported reseller/DNS arrangement. Ordinary website customers can use the nameservers assigned to their service and do not need private nameservers.

Steps

  1. Confirm that your reseller or DNS service supports private nameservers. Obtain the exact hostnames and service-assigned IP addresses; two names do not by themselves provide independent DNS servers.
  2. Sign in to the current registrar for the parent domain. The older Network Solutions video shows Manage Name Servers. Find the current child-host, registered-nameserver or glue-record function, or ask that registrar for its equivalent.
  3. Register each intended nameserver hostname with its assigned address. Create the matching A/AAAA records in the authoritative DNS zone as required by the service.
  4. Verify that the DNS servers actually answer for the intended zones before changing a customer domain's nameserver delegation. Retain old settings until the change is accepted.

Check the result

Check both the parent/registry glue and the authoritative host records, then query each nameserver directly for the intended zone. A saved registrar form or A record alone is insufficient.

Troubleshooting and support

If the registrar rejects a hostname or the server does not answer, confirm parent-domain ownership, glue support and the assigned service addresses. Do not invent additional IPs or assume an ordinary cPanel login operates a nameserver.

If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
