Quick answer
Update only the saved credentials for the affected Thunderbird mailbox after changing its real mailbox password. This does not change the password on the mail server.
Applies to
For an existing mailbox you are authorized to use in Thunderbird. For Interactive Online hosted mail, copy the exact secure settings from Email Accounts > Connect Devices. Account Hub and older Account Settings setup flows differ by Thunderbird version.
Steps
- Change the mailbox password through its actual provider first and record which devices use it.
- In Thunderbird Settings, find Privacy & Security > Saved Passwords, or use the version's password prompt/update controls. Remove or update only the matching incoming and SMTP entries; avoid Remove All.
- Retry mail access and sending, enter the new mailbox password in the secure prompt and save it only on a trusted device.
Check the result
Test both incoming mail and SMTP sending, since their saved entries can differ.
Troubleshooting and support
If the prompt repeats, check the mailbox/provider and exact hostname. Repeated guesses can trigger account protections.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
