Quick answer

Review the official Wordfence setup, license and firewall status for your WordPress website. Firewall optimization can change server configuration files, so preserve the requested before-state first. A scan finding needs investigation before a file is repaired or deleted.

Applies to

Use an authorized WordPress administrator on your Interactive Online cPanel service. Wordfence is an optional third-party security product. Its account, license, premium features and support are separate from your hosting login. Existing hosting, CDN and application protections can act on the same request.

Install and inspect the current protection

  1. Keep a current files-and-database recovery copy and a verified authorized route to hosting support. Record any existing WordPress security plugin and CDN controls. Check for overlapping rules before adding another tool.
  2. For an approved installation, select the official Wordfence Security listing in Plugins > Add New Plugin, install and activate it. Follow the current vendor license/setup prompts and check any terms or charge before accepting them.
  3. Open Wordfence > Firewall and inspect its protection level and status. The vendor distinguishes Basic WordPress Protection from Extended Protection. Learning Mode, when shown, is a configuration state and does not establish that the site's intended requests have been reviewed.
  4. Review scan configuration and schedule before running an authorized scan on a busy service. Inspect each finding, its path and the vendor's explanation. A modified plugin/theme file can reflect a legitimate customization; an unfamiliar file is not automatically safe or malicious.

If Wordfence says a license is required

A new installation can show You must install a license to continue using Wordfence and Resume Installation. Complete the official license process for the intended website and review the selected plan and terms. Do not copy another website's key or share a key publicly. This message means setup still needs attention; it does not confirm that firewall optimization is complete.

Wordfence firewall optimization

  1. Use the firewall's optimization prompt, or open All Firewall Options and inspect Protection Level. Confirm that the detected server configuration fits this hosting environment.
  2. Download the exact .htaccess and/or .user.ini recovery copies requested by the wizard before continuing. Store them outside public web access. Optimization can establish an early-loading firewall through configuration and wordfence-waf.php.
  3. If the detected method is unclear, stop and ask hosting support. Avoid copying another provider's server directives. Changes to PHP loading can affect other applications or subdirectories in the same account.
  4. After an approved optimization, check the saved protection level and normal website behavior. Keep the recovery copies and vendor removal instructions available. Moving the site or removing the plugin may require its documented configuration cleanup.

If a legitimate request is blocked

Record the exact block page, time/time zone and request identifier. Determine whether Wordfence, the hosting layer or a CDN produced it. Use a narrow rule review rather than disabling every protection or allowing a broad IP range. Keep private URLs, cookies, administrator details and live-traffic records out of public screenshots.

Verify and request support

Check authorized administration, login, public pages, forms and any relevant store workflow after the approved change. A clean scan or active firewall badge does not prove that every vulnerability is absent. Provide support with the affected URL, plugin version, protection level, last change and redacted error. Hosting configuration questions can go through Interactive Online support; vendor account/licensing and product-specific findings may need Wordfence support.
