Quick answer
Claude Code Desktop supports remote SSH environments, but that mode runs Claude Code and its helper on the remote machine. A cPanel account with SSH is not automatically a supported remote development machine. For shared hosting, running Claude Code locally and using a narrow SSH deployment is often the more practical starting point.
Before you start
Check Anthropic's current remote requirements and the hosting account's resources. The remote mode needs a suitable processor, working shell and SFTP, executable install storage, outbound network access, and space for its helper. Do not install it on a production account before the provider confirms suitability.
What to do
- First test a normal SSH and SFTP session with the account user and an independently verified server fingerprint.
- Compare the remote account against the official requirements. Jailed-shell restrictions, a noexec mount, quota, or blocked outbound connections can prevent operation.
- If supported, add a named SSH environment in Claude Code Desktop using the user/host or a local SSH alias and your local private-key path.
- Choose a dedicated development folder or worktree. Start with an inspection and preserve approval requirements for writes and publication.
Check the result
Confirm where commands execute, which folder is selected, and whether the helper is installed. Test a non-production change and browser preview before using the workflow for live work.
If something does not work
If the remote helper cannot start, keep the site unchanged and use the local-agent workflow. Do not ask support to disable server isolation or open an unauthenticated agent listener as a workaround.
