Quick answer
Database users need a deliberate assignment to the website's database. In cPanel, create the database and user if needed, connect them through Add User To Database, and grant the application's required privileges. Keep complete account-prefixed names and the protected application settings consistent.
Applies to
Use an authorized Interactive Online cPanel service with database capacity and the relevant tools enabled. The website installer may already have created its database. Confirm the intended application and existing objects before adding another user or database.
Create the database and dedicated user
- Open Databases > Database Wizard for a guided new setup, or Manage My Databases to inspect/manage existing objects. Older interfaces may use MySQL in these labels.
- Use the intended database or create one for the approved application. Record its complete prefixed name. A short suffix alone may not work in the application.
- Create a dedicated application user with a unique password through the secure interface. Save it in a password manager and protected application configuration. Your customer-account login and hosting login are separate identities.
Assign database users to the correct database
- In Manage My Databases, find Add User To Database. Select the full user and exact database, then choose Add.
- Choose the privileges the application requires and save through Make Changes or the control shown by your version. An installer may require all privileges on this database; do not grant access to unrelated databases.
- Review the saved association. If the user already exists, adding its relationship to the database does not require deleting or recreating the database.
- Configure the application with the actual database name, user, password and provided host. If changing a user password, identify other applications using it and update their protected settings too.
Verify and troubleshoot
Check the application's normal connection and expected operation. Opening phpMyAdmin through cPanel single sign-on does not prove that the application's separate credentials are correct. Keep public errors from displaying secrets.
For MySQL Access denied, a user not assigned, a host mismatch or a privilege error, use the cPanel database Access denied troubleshooting guide. Do not respond by deleting the database or making every user an administrator. For incomplete/missing tables, use the import checks.
