Quick answer
A Shopify theme copy saves theme code and settings. Products, orders, customers, content, files and app data need separate recovery arrangements.
Back up a theme
- Identify the correct live theme. Make a dated duplicate before editing.
- Download a theme ZIP when you need an independent copy. Record its store, source theme and date.
- List other affected data, including navigation, metafields, product records, files and app settings. Back these up separately.
- Document the restore process, app dependencies and any paid theme license restrictions.
- Test a preview or representative recovery without replacing live store data. Keep the original until checks pass.
Recovery limits
Opening a ZIP does not prove the whole store can be restored. Republishing an older theme does not undo later orders, product changes or app actions. Ask for a store-level recovery plan when the change affects those records.
