Quick answer
A product template controls the arrangement of a product page, while the product record supplies information such as title, price, and media. A template change can affect every product assigned to it.
Applies to
For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.
Before you begin
Identify the target product and the current live and draft themes. Separate a request for different product information from a request for a different page layout.
What to do
- Open the product in Shopify administration and note its theme-template assignment. Record the current value before changing it.
- Inspect the corresponding template in the intended theme. Determine which sections are shared and which values come from product-specific dynamic data.
- Preview several products using the template, including products with different variants, media proportions, and optional fields.
- If a distinct layout is needed, create a separate template and plan its assignment deliberately. Draft-theme previews do not automatically change the resource’s live assignment.
- Apply the approved assignment at release and verify the exact product URL. Avoid bulk assignment until the intended product list has been reviewed.
How to check the result
Check both the target product and another product that should remain unchanged. Confirm variant selection, price display, availability, and add-to-cart behavior after any template change.
If you need help
If a template cannot be selected, compare its availability in the current live theme with the draft being reviewed. Send product URL, template name, and theme identity, without exporting unrelated customer or order data.
