Quick answer
Duplicating or downloading a Shopify theme preserves theme code and configuration, but it is not a complete backup of the store. Products, orders, customers, content, files, and app data have separate recovery needs.
Applies to
For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.
Before you begin
Identify the theme currently serving customers and the reason for the backup. A theme copy is useful before layout work, while a wider store recovery plan needs more than theme files.
What to do
- Create a clearly named copy of the correct theme before making changes. Include a date or project reference so it cannot be confused with production.
- Download the theme package when an independent copy is appropriate. Store it outside the Shopify theme library with its source theme identity and timestamp.
- List other data affected by the project, such as product records, navigation, metafields, files, or app settings. Arrange suitable exports or backups for those separately.
- Document how the theme and related resources would be restored. Confirm any paid theme license or app dependency before using the copy on another store.
- Test a representative recovery or preview without replacing active store data. Keep the original available until acceptance and recovery needs are satisfied.
How to check the result
The backup record should state its coverage and exclusions. Opening a downloaded ZIP confirms the file exists, but does not prove that all customer journeys or app-dependent content can be restored.
If you need help
If a proposed change touches catalog or order data, ask for a store-level recovery approach. Do not assume republishing yesterday’s theme reverses database changes, app actions, or transactions that occurred afterward.
