Quick answer
Match each mail port with its supported TLS mode. Do not follow the old video's example of selecting no encryption.
Applies to
Historical reference for Outlook 2016 while moving to a supported mail client. Microsoft ended Office 2016 support on October 14, 2025. Classic Outlook, new Outlook and other clients use different menus. Preserve local-only mail and contacts before migration.
Steps
- Record the working hostnames, full mailbox address and secure settings from the actual provider.
- In the older Outlook interface, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings, select the account and use Change > More Settings > Advanced where offered.
- Set incoming and outgoing values separately. Common implicit-TLS values are IMAP 993, POP 995 and SMTP 465; SMTP 587 normally uses STARTTLS when the service supports it.
Check the result
Test both receiving and authenticated sending. Confirm no certificate warning was bypassed.
Troubleshooting and support
If one direction fails, check its own server, TLS mode and port. A custom port is not automatically secure.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
