Quick answer
Update Outlook's saved mailbox password after changing it at the actual mail provider. Editing the saved password does not change the server credential.
Applies to
Historical reference for Outlook 2016 while moving to a supported mail client. Microsoft ended Office 2016 support on October 14, 2025. Classic Outlook, new Outlook and other clients use different menus. Preserve local-only mail and contacts before migration.
Steps
- Change the real mailbox password through its provider and identify all authorized devices that use it.
- In the older interface, open File > Account Settings > Account Settings and select the exact account, then update the saved credential through Change or the supported password prompt.
- Save and review the associated SMTP credential as well. Use the current client's supported flow during migration.
Check the result
Test both incoming mail and sending, then check other authorized devices.
Troubleshooting and support
Repeated prompts can involve a separate outgoing credential or wrong username. Do not repeatedly guess passwords or reset the cPanel account to fix one mailbox.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
