Quick answer
Favorites are shortcuts to real Outlook folders, not independent backup copies. Changing messages through a favorite changes the same underlying folder.
Applies to
Historical reference for Outlook 2016 while moving to a supported mail client. Microsoft ended Office 2016 support on October 14, 2025. Classic Outlook, new Outlook and other clients use different menus. Preserve local-only mail and contacts before migration.
Steps
- Locate the intended folder and account in the folder pane.
- In the older interface, right-click and choose Show in Favorites when offered.
- Use Remove from Favorites to remove the shortcut; do not choose Delete Folder unless you intend to remove the actual folder and its contents.
Check the result
Open the favorite and compare it with the original folder. Confirm removing the shortcut leaves the real folder intact.
Troubleshooting and support
If a favorite is absent in another client, recreate that client's shortcut. Do not assume a device-specific favorite is an IMAP folder or recovery copy.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
