Quick answer
To exit PuTTY after reaching the remote shell prompt, type exit and press Enter. To open a session, use the exact service hostname, SSH port and authorized user, then verify the server host-key fingerprint before trusting a new or changed connection.
Applies to
For PuTTY on your own Windows computer and an account with authorized SSH access. Use the hosting service's assigned hostname, port and user. An ordinary cPanel account is not a root login; your service may use a nonstandard SSH port.
Steps
- In PuTTY Session, enter the assigned hostname and SSH port, then select SSH. Do not assume the video's port 22 applies to your service.
- Choose Open and verify the host key through a trusted service source before accepting it. Complete the supported account/key authentication.
- Confirm the remote account and working directory before running any command. When finished, use exit to end the shell cleanly.
Exit from the shell prompt
If an editor or another program is active, save your work and leave it using that program's own controls first. At the remote shell prompt, type exit and press Enter. Confirm that the session ends. Closing the window while a command is running can interrupt that work.
Check the result
Check the intended host/user through harmless commands such as hostname and whoami when permitted.
Troubleshooting and support
For Permission denied or a changed host key, stop and confirm the exact service credentials/fingerprint. Do not switch to root or bypass the warning.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
