Use Perplexity for website research and connected website tasks Print

Quick answer

Perplexity can research public information and, in supported products, work through configured MCP connections. Those capabilities do not mean every Perplexity chat can run SSH or edit hosting files. Treat research, connector access, and local or cloud execution as separate workflows with different permissions.

Before you start

Check the current Perplexity product, account entitlement, device support, and connector documentation. Identify the website owner and whether the task needs content access, code deployment, or hosting administration. Do not assume a file-search connector grants write access.

What to do

  1. Use public research to gather requirements or troubleshoot a sanitized symptom. Keep account passwords, private keys, and customer data out of the prompt.
  2. If an MCP connection is available, verify the server operator, transport, authentication, and precise actions. Prefer an account-specific connector with a narrow scope.
  3. Begin with a read-only task and inspect the returned source or site identity. Confirm where any code execution would run.
  4. For publication, require a preview or diff, current backup, explicit target, and verified result. Use a separate local coding/deployment workflow if the selected Perplexity surface cannot perform the action.

Check the result

Check the actual CMS or hosted page after an action. Keep source citations for research conclusions and file/URL evidence for website changes; these are different kinds of proof.

If something does not work

If a connector cannot reach a site, check its documented network and authentication requirements. Do not expose an unrestricted shell or publish a secret-bearing URL to work around a missing integration.
