Connect ChatGPT to a reviewed website MCP app Print

Quick answer

A custom MCP app can give an eligible ChatGPT environment access to defined website tools. The app must exist, authenticate the customer, and expose the required actions. ChatGPT developer-mode or workspace availability alone does not create a hosting integration.

Current ChatGPT setup and task choice

OpenAI currently documents adding a custom MCP server through ChatGPT Plugins, configuring authentication, installing the resulting plugin, and selecting it in a conversation. Supported plugins work in Chat and Work, subject to account/workspace policy. Older developer-mode screenshots may show a different setup.

Before you start

Check the current official custom-app documentation, your workspace policy, the approved endpoint, and the supported authentication flow. Read-only research integrations and write-capable tools have different permissions and acceptance requirements.

What to do

  1. Review the app operator, exact tools, requested scopes, data handling, and supported customer accounts before connecting.
  2. Use the supported ChatGPT app or developer setup flow for the reviewed endpoint, subject to your account and workspace permissions.
  3. Authorize through the real service login, not by placing a hosting password, SSH private key, or API token in a chat message.
  4. Test a read-only website inspection, then a reversible staging change with a preview and backup. Require deliberate publication for the live site.

Check the result

Check the native CMS or hosting result and verify that another customer's account is inaccessible. Keep the current official setup link with your project notes rather than relying on an old screenshot of the interface.

If something does not work

If the app is unavailable in your plan or the server only supports read operations, use a suitable local coding/deployment workflow. Do not expose a private shell listener as an MCP shortcut.
