Review a Shopify theme change before publishing it Print

Quick answer

An unpublished theme lets you review theme changes while the current theme continues serving customers. Previewing a theme does not isolate every store-wide setting, app, or resource used by that theme.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

Record the current live theme identity and create a named development copy. Agree which changes are limited to theme files and which may affect shared store data.

What to do

  1. Open the intended draft theme and confirm its name before editing. Avoid working from a browser tab whose theme identity is unclear.
  2. Make the scoped change and use the theme’s preview link. Review representative home, collection, product, search, cart, and content pages as appropriate.
  3. Check mobile layouts and interactive behavior. Test variants, filters, cart updates, menus, and relevant app blocks rather than reviewing only static screenshots.
  4. Compare live changes made during development. Preserve current merchant settings, content assignments, and other edits that should remain after release.
  5. Approve the exact theme version and publication window. Keep the former live theme as a recovery option and verify the public store immediately after publishing.

How to check the result

Confirm the expected theme is published and the changed behavior is visible in a fresh visit. Review critical purchase paths and shared integrations, including states not covered by the design mockup.

If you need help

If preview and live differ, send both URLs and the theme identities. App settings, resource assignments, cache, or merchant edits can explain the difference. Publishing a theme is a production action and should follow the agreed approval process.
