Quick answer
Change the real mailbox password at its provider, then update the saved credential in a supported replacement client. The old Windows Mail setting did not change the server password.
Applies to
Historical reference for the retired Windows Mail application, not current new Outlook. Microsoft ended Windows Mail, Calendar and People support on December 31, 2024. Preserve local data and move to a supported client; the old app is not a reliable current sending/receiving workflow.
Steps
- Confirm mailbox ownership and change its password through the actual mail provider when required.
- Update that exact mailbox's saved incoming and outgoing credentials in the supported client.
- Update other authorized devices and preserve the password securely.
Check the result
Test both receiving and authenticated sending on each affected device.
Troubleshooting and support
Repeated prompts can reflect another saved SMTP password or wrong username. Keep the old/new passwords out of the support request.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
