Correct Shopify inventory when stock exists but an item is sold out Print

Quick answer

Stock at one location is not automatically available for every online order. Review the exact variant, inventory state, and fulfillment location before adjusting quantities.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

Use a current physical count or a trusted inventory-system record. Determine whether an app or warehouse service controls the stock, so a manual correction is not immediately overwritten.

What to do

  1. Open Products > Inventory and choose the relevant location. Search by the specific variant or SKU rather than the product name alone.
  2. Compare Available, Committed, Unavailable, On hand, and Incoming quantities. Stock already committed to orders is different from stock available for new sales.
  3. Check whether that location fulfills the variant and is available for online fulfillment. A location that does not fulfill it can show On hand stock without an Available quantity.
  4. If the physical quantity is wrong, use the inventory adjustment action for the selected location and record a meaningful reason. If an app owns the quantity, correct the source system instead.

Check the result

Recheck the saved quantity and storefront variant availability. Also test a destination your store serves, because shipping and market restrictions can affect whether a customer can buy it.

If the problem continues

Give support the SKU, location, inventory states, approximate time, and inventory-app name. Do not change several locations to the same total; that can count one physical stock pool more than once.
