Edit a WordPress website with Codex or Claude Code Print

Quick answer

Use Codex or Claude Code in an authorized local or staging project, identify how WordPress stores the affected content, and request a narrow change. Review the code or native content diff, test the page and editor, then publish only the approved revision. Copy changes and multi-file code changes need different tools.

Choose the right operation

  • Text or image: use the existing editor or an approved content API.
  • Block or builder layout: use tools that understand its native data and preserve editability.
  • Theme behavior: use a supported child theme or appropriate site plugin.
  • Plugin behavior: use its supported configuration or extension points. Avoid editing vendor files that an update replaces.

Prepare the project

  1. Confirm the site, hosting entitlement, WordPress/PHP versions, active theme, builder, and affected URL. Use your existing local connection instructions if you need file access.
  2. Work in an approved local or protected staging copy with matching files and database. Keep production email, payments, scheduled actions, and indexing from running unintentionally on the copy.
  3. Keep a recoverable checkpoint. Provide only the project files and sanitized data the task needs. Exclude private configuration, secrets, real customer records, and unrelated websites.
  4. Set project instructions describing the editable folders, CMS/editor, checks, deployment destination, and approval boundary. Instructions guide the agent; actual tool permissions enforce access.
Inspect this WordPress project without changing it. Identify which editor and template render the Services page, which content item owns its introduction, and whether its buttons are shared. Propose the smallest change to the introduction. Preserve native editing, URLs, forms, analytics/consent behavior, and unrelated pages. Show the intended diff and checks before writing. Do not publish or change plugins, users, permissions, or the database directly.

Make and verify the revision

  1. Review the inspection and select the intended content or code method. If the agent cannot identify the page owner, resolve that before a write.
  2. Approve the limited development change. For content automation, inspect one draft's ID, content, modified time, and status first. For code, inspect the file diff and relevant lint/build results.
  3. Open the page in its normal editor. Confirm blocks or builder controls remain usable. Check preview and public behavior at phone, tablet, and desktop widths.
  4. Test the changed links, menu states, images, or form using sample data. Check another page using a changed shared component.
  5. Reconcile newer live changes before deployment. Approve the exact files or content revision and destination. Publish selectively, read back the actual result, and keep rollback limited to the affected revision.

When to stop and investigate

Stop if the agent proposes replacing builder content with a full HTML page, changing serialized database fields directly, modifying WordPress core, or overwriting the whole live database for a small change. A successful local preview does not prove live deployment. If an authenticated API is blocked, inspect the account and security requirements rather than broadening permissions or disabling protection.

When to contact support

Contact Interactive Online if the hosting destination or available account tools are unclear. Include the affected URL, service name, time and time zone, exact error, and a screenshot with private details replaced by sample data. Keep passwords, private keys, API tokens, customer records, and billing information out of the message. Your external AI provider handles its subscription and usage limits.

Use a skill for the WordPress task

WordPress Pro can guide a scoped theme or plugin change. The official WordPress agent skills provide routing, project assessment and focused block, plugin, REST, maintenance and performance guidance. For builder pages, use the Elementor skill workflow or DiviOps native Divi 5 workflow where its requirements are met. Installing a skill supplies instructions; verify site access separately.
