Managing DNS zones in WHM Print

  • 4

Quick answer

Edit DNS only where the live authoritative zone is hosted. WHM DNS records can affect websites, mail and domain verification for every name in that zone.

Applies to

For an authorized reseller or administrator whose Interactive Online service includes the relevant WHM permission. Ordinary website hosting uses cPanel and does not imply WHM or root access. Work only with accounts you own or are explicitly authorized to administer. The video is an older interface reference.

Steps

  1. Confirm the domain, authoritative nameservers and account ownership. Export the existing zone.
  2. Use the permitted DNS Zone Manager or equivalent zone tool and select the exact domain. Change only the required record with the supplied value and TTL.
  3. Preserve unrelated records and review SOA, NS and DNSSEC dependencies before structural changes. An MX target must be a mail-host name, not an IP address.

Check the result

Query the authoritative server for the changed record and test the affected website/mail task after allowing for cached TTLs.

Troubleshooting and support

If WHM is not authoritative, make the change at the actual DNS provider. Do not delete the zone to troubleshoot one incorrect record.

If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
