Quick answer
Back up WordPress files and its database before updating core. Test a protected staging copy when available, then verify the live site and administration after the authorized update.
Applies to
For a WordPress site you are authorized to edit. Your WordPress role, installed theme, plugins and editor determine the available controls. Hosting access does not automatically establish WordPress administrator access. The video shows an older version.
Steps
- Confirm a usable files-and-database recovery copy and record the installed core, theme and plugin versions. Review compatibility and any application-specific update sequence.
- Open Dashboard > Updates and review the offered WordPress update. Run the intended update once; avoid closing it midway or starting overlapping updates.
- Read the completion result, clear only relevant caches and test the required website functions. Keep the recovery copy until acceptance is complete.
Check the result
Check representative pages, login, editing, forms and any store workflow. Confirm the actual core version, not just a success notice.
Troubleshooting and support
For a failed update or maintenance screen, preserve the exact error and contact support before repeatedly reinstalling core or deleting unknown files.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
