Quick answer
Manage post categories through Posts > Categories. Category names organize posts; changing a category slug can change its archive URL.
Applies to
For a WordPress site you are authorized to edit. Your WordPress role, installed theme, plugins and editor determine the available controls. Hosting access does not automatically establish WordPress administrator access. The video shows an older version.
Steps
- Review existing categories before adding a new one. Confirm which posts and menu/archive links use the category.
- Create or edit the intended name, slug, parent and description, then save. Use Quick Edit only for fields it actually exposes.
- For a merge/removal, review post assignments and default-category behavior first. Plan URL redirects separately when an existing archive URL changes.
Check the result
Check a representative post and its public category archive. Verify any navigation link that references the category.
Troubleshooting and support
If duplicate names or unexpected archive URLs appear, compare the actual IDs and slugs. Similar names do not establish identical category content.
If the problem continues, contact support from the account that owns the service. Include the domain, exact error, time and time zone, tool name, and a redacted screenshot. Keep passwords, private keys, cookies and private message content out of the ticket.
