Quick answer

A URL redirect helps visitors reach a relevant replacement when an old address no longer exists. Shopify redirects do not override a normal page that still loads at the old address.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

List the exact old address and its best replacement. Prefer a matching product, collection, or information page rather than sending every retired link to the home page.

What to do

  1. Check the old address as a visitor and confirm that it is genuinely missing. Review whether it is a reserved Shopify path that cannot be redirected.
  2. Open Content > Menus, then View URL redirects. Create a redirect with the old path in Redirect from and the reviewed destination in Redirect to.
  3. Use a store-relative path for a destination on the same primary domain. Check spelling and avoid a destination that points back to the old URL.
  4. Save and test the original address in a fresh browser session. Review important market or language versions separately when they use different destinations.

Check the result

Confirm that the old URL leads to the correct replacement without a chain or loop. Update menus and internal links too, so visitors do not depend unnecessarily on the redirect.

If the problem continues

If the redirect fails, check for an active source page, reserved path, query-string behavior, or a cached earlier redirect. Give support both complete addresses and the observed result.
