Set up a Shopify free-shipping threshold and test its limits Print

Quick answer

A free-shipping threshold must match the intended destination and cart conditions. Test both sides of the threshold and a discounted cart before advertising the offer.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

Write down the eligible countries, products, minimum order amount, and exceptions. Identify whether your store uses shipping profiles or the newer shipping-options-by-market interface.

What to do

1. Open Settings > Shipping and delivery and select the shipping configuration serving the intended products and destinations.
2. Create or edit the applicable rate and set the shipping price to zero. If the offer requires a minimum order amount, enter that condition explicitly.
3. Review the paid rate below the threshold so that customers do not fall into a gap with no eligible rate. Check the current currency and destination coverage.
4. Save and test carts below, at, and above the threshold. Also test discounts and combinations of products fulfilled from different locations or shipping profiles.

Check the result

Confirm the correct free or paid choice at checkout for each test. A mixed shipment can combine rates, so one product's free rate does not necessarily make the whole order free.

If the problem continues

If the result differs from the offer, record the cart, discount, address, and shipping configuration. Ask support whether a rate condition, app, or combined shipment is responsible before broadening the offer.
