Quick answer
Authorized and Pending do not mean the same thing as Paid. Confirm the payment provider's result and the order's supported capture action before shipping goods or collecting money again.
Applies to
For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.
Before you begin
Check the exact order, payment method, Timeline, and your payment permissions. Identify whether the store captures automatically, captures manually, or uses a provider that settles asynchronously.
What to do
- For an Authorized payment, review its authorization expiry and amount. If manual capture is intended and available, inspect the order's capture action before confirming it.
- For Pending, review the provider's status and Shopify's restrictions. Some payment methods prevent edits or cancellation until the attempt resolves.
- Do not mark the order paid or charge a second payment method just to clear the badge. Reconcile the original attempt first.
- After a supported capture or completed payment, reopen the order and confirm the result. For expired or failed attempts, use the provider-supported next step rather than retrying blindly.
Check the result
Check the transaction and payment status, not only the order total. Verify any related customer email and fulfillment hold before proceeding.
If the problem continues
If the payment remains uncertain, contact the payment provider or Shopify Support with the order and transaction reference. Do not ask the customer to send a card number through email or the support chatbot.
