Quick answer

Edit the existing order when Shopify supports the requested correction, then reconcile any additional payment or refund. An order edit can change its financial balance and fulfillment requirements.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

Confirm the customer's requested change and your Edit orders permission. Check payment status and whether a warehouse or app has already begun fulfillment.

What to do

  1. Open the order and select Edit when available. Review Shopify's restrictions before changing an imported, app-managed, pending-payment, or otherwise special order.
  2. Adjust the eligible unfulfilled items or quantities. Review every changed line and the updated total before saving.
  3. If an additional balance is due, use the order's supported payment or invoice flow. If money is owed to the customer, complete the appropriate refund separately.
  4. Notify the fulfillment provider of changes through its supported process, and review the customer notification before sending it.

Check the result

Check the saved order, balance, payment status, fulfillment quantities, and Timeline. Confirm that the customer and fulfillment provider have the same final version.

If the problem continues

Fulfilled quantities cannot be treated like unfulfilled lines. For those items, a return or another supported remedy may be needed. If Edit is unavailable, send support the order number and state instead of duplicating the order and risking a second charge or shipment.
