Quick answer

Cancellation, refunding, restocking, and stopping a shipment are related but separate decisions. Review the order's current state before confirming any cancellation.

Applies to

For the owner or authorized staff of the selected Shopify store, with the permissions needed for this task. Shopify hosts the store separately from a cPanel hosting account. Features and workflows depend on the current Shopify plan, theme and apps.

Before you begin

Check whether payment was captured, any refund already exists, items were fulfilled, a shipping label was purchased, or a fulfillment service accepted the order.

What to do

  1. Open the individual order and review its payment, fulfillment, and Timeline. If a warehouse or app is processing it, request a stop through that service first.
  2. Choose Cancel order when Shopify makes it available. Carefully review the refund timing or method, inventory restocking, cancellation reason, and customer notification.
  3. Confirm only after the displayed choices match the intended outcome. Do not assume cancellation automatically voids a purchased shipping label or recalls a parcel.
  4. Check for remaining tasks, including a deferred refund or an external fulfillment cancellation. Treat an already-refunded order individually to avoid duplicate refund processing.

Check the result

Review the final payment status, refunded amount, inventory outcome, and Timeline. If a refund was deferred, track it until it has actually been completed.

If the problem continues

Some order states cannot be canceled. A return or separate refund may be required. Ask support to inspect the exact order and provider state rather than repeatedly trying bulk cancellation.
